Star anise and cinnamon are two of the spices people reach for when the weather turns cold: in mulled drinks, baked fruit and slow-cooked dishes. Here they go into fine-ground coffee instead. The blend is 4 percent cinnamon and 3 percent star anise, with no sugar and no milk.
The flavor
Star anise smells and tastes a lot like licorice, but darker and spicier. Cinnamon softens that and adds a woody sweetness in the aroma. Together they make a cup that is deep and fragrant rather than sharp.
Ways to enjoy it
- Hot: 2 level teaspoons (about 6 g) in 150 ml hot water. Stir and wait a minute.
- With milk: pour your own milk in at the end. None is in the pouch.
- Iced: stir into 50 ml hot water, then add ice and cold water.
- Filter or French press: same ratio as the hot cup.
